Research abstract

THE PROJECT COVERS THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ANALYTICAL MODEL AND THEORY OF HUMAN ERROR FOR AERONAUTICAL SYSTEMS COMPRISING ON-BOARD AND OFF-PLATFORM HUMANS, AIRCRAFT, AND TRAFFIC CONTROL/COMMUNICATION/NAVIGATION/FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM ELEMENTS. THE THEORY IS INTENDED TO CHARACTERIZE SUPERVISORY, MONITORING, DECISION-MAKING, INFORMATION PROCESSING, AND CONTINUOUS AND DISCRETE CONTROL ACTIVITIES OF THE HUMAN(S). EMPHASIS IN THE ERROR ASPECTS OF THE SYSTEM IS PLACED ON GRIEVOUS (EXCEEDING OF SAFE OPERATING TOLERANCES) ERRORS. THE MODEL IS A MULTI-STAGE DECISION PROCESS, WITH DISCRETE AND CONTINUOUS ELEMENTS, WHICH MAXIMIZES SUBJECTIVE UTILITY. AS SUCH, THE MODEL ENCOMPASSES A BROAD RANGE OF HUMAN FUNCTION, AND IS INTENDED TO BE USEFUL IN ANALYZING THE OVERALL PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY OF THE PILOT-AIRCRAFT SYSTEM. SUCH AN ANALYSIS TOOL SHOULD BE INVALUABLE IN RESEARCH DIRECTED TOWARDS REDUCING HUMAN ERROR IN AVIATION OPERATIONS.
