Research abstract

Beam steering is a critical component of a variety of optical platforms. The large size, weight, and power (SWaP) of mirror-based gimbal systems limit their usability for compact platforms. Compared to conventional gimbal systems, Risley Prism beamsteerers are more compact, more resistant to vibration, offer higher scan speeds (3000 rpm), and require lower power for operation. To further the state of the art of existing Risely Prism systems we propose to further refine the new optical element based on metasurface Risley prisms (MRPs). Emphasis of this program will be on improving operational bandwidth.
