Research abstract

65367 The longevity of hot-gas-path components is a critical issue for advanced gas turbines being developed for power generation units. Both thermal barrier coatings and hot-gas-path component base materials are susceptible to spallation, thermal aging, and cracking. Nondestructive evaluation methods are needed to monitor the degradation of these thermal barrier coatings and substrates. By supporting repair and rework decisions for the expensive hot-gas-path components, their useful life can be maximized. This project will develop a robust nondestructive examination tool to monitor the condition and assess the remaining life of coatings and base materials of advanced gas turbine hot-gas-path components. Phase I will extend the inspection capability of a conformable eddy current inspection system to permit the determination of four thermal barrier coating unknowns (ceramic topcoat thickness, bond coat porosity, bond coat thickness, and substrate degradation). The feasibility of a fieldable inspection system will be demonstrated. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: The power generation industry would have an available means of cost effectively managing the life of hot-gas-path and coated components in advanced gas turbine generation systems. Commercial applications include land-based turbine component inspections, high performance functional coating systems in electronics, energy and manufacturing, as well as aerospace markets.
