Research abstract
This project describes a design methodology and development environment that can be used to develop efficient parallel or distributed software systems. Implicit in the methodology are concerns for the characteristics of the information being processed, the properties of the host computer systems, execution time performance issues and measures of effectiveness. The methodology incorporates the additional functions, not common to single processor software development, of: re-structuring, partitioning, allocation, and performance evaluation. The proposed environment consists of a modular software tool set which can operate upon knowledge base, which develops along with the development of the software system. The modularity of the tool set allows alternative versions of the tools to be developed, to address the different execution constraints that may be needed in a design, such as in real-time, embedded systems. The project is based on earlier/current research and prototype tool set development at the University of Connecticut. Phase I will investigate a specific application domain for the initial systems development, based on this methodology.
