Research abstract

This Phase II project is proposed to further develop and commercialize MicroCoating Technologies' NanoMiser technology for the production of high quality nanopowders. Phase I has demonstrated a novel, low-cost method able to produce a variety ofnanopowders of tailored size and composition. The results from Phase I have established a solid ground for this Phase II plan, which will focus on producing yttria stabilized zirconia nanopowders that have dual applications in both the military andcivilian sectors. We will work on: (1) optimizing our process to control nanopower properties, (2) developing an efficient collection and dispersion system, and (3) scaling the process to commercial production levels.MircoCoating Technologies has developed its proprietary device-the Naomiser. This innovative atomizer is capable of producing uniform, submicron aerosol, and order of magnitude smaller than those achieved by currently available state-of-the-art atomizersusing ultrasonics and electrostatic processes. Processing of these aerosols directly leads to the formation of desired nanopowders. This process provides three major advantages: (1) low cost, (2) high quality nanopowders, and (3) continuous operation.Successes in this Phase II research will lead to a commercially viable technology in the production of nanopowders. The technology is expected to benefit both the military and civilian sectors by providing a low cost, commercially viable process for thesynthesis of high quality nanopowders that can be used to improve materials, minimize devices and provide special properties.
