Research abstract

THE RESEARCHERS PROPOSE TO DERIVE EQUATIONS OF MOTION FOR MULTI-PHASE FLUID FLOWS USING VARIOUS LEVELS OF COARSE-GRAINING ON THE MICROSCOPIC DYNAMICS AND THEREBY OBTAIN DYNAMICALLY CONSISTENT AND USEFUL DESCRIPTIONS OF THEMACROSCOPIC FLOW BEHAVIOR. THE RESULTS OF THIS ANALYSIS WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN HIGH RESOLUTION COMPUTER CODES FOR THE DESCRIPTION OF THESE MULTI-PHASE FLOWS. THE SPECIFIC COARSE-GRAINING METHODS TO BE EMPLOYED ARE PROJECTION OPERATOR METHODS, NONLINEAR RESPONSE TECHNIQUES, AND THE RENORMALIZATION GROUP METHOD. SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS WILL BEGIVEN TO BUBBLY AND ANNULAR FLOWS IN PHASE I. THE PRINCIPALADVANTAGE OF THE PRESENT APPROACH OVER PREVIOUS APPROACHES TO THESE PROBLEMS IS THAT THE METHODS TO BE USED SHOULD LEADTO WELL-POSED MATHEMATICAL FORMULATIONS OF THESE DIFFICULT PROBLEMS, THE RESULTS OF WHICH SHOULD LEAD TO USEFUL PROGRESS IS NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS.
