Research abstract

In this SBIR we will perform the research leading to the development of a bright high resolution (SVGA), full color, LCD based projection system which has a wide and variable range of image or screen sizes and is insensitive to the vibration encountered in a shipboard military environment. All of the important technology areas will be addressed including the illumination subsystem (light source, reflector, condenser), the LCD display device, prepolarization and polarization issues, possible depixelization methodologies, a continuous zoom projection lens, thermal management issues, vibration robustness, EMI issues, and a suitable screen. All aspects of the system 411 be optimized in order to meet the ultimate requirements of installation on the New Attack Submarine. Special attention will be paid towards a low cost system implementation as well as a growth to HDTV imagery. Each of the subsystems including the illumination, the LCD device, the projection optics, and the screen will be optimized both independently as well as in concert with the rest of the system to assure an overall optimum design. The most difficult problems typically associated with the design of projection systems are brightness, uniformity of brightness, and resolution. These will be given a high priority in the-design of this projection system.
