Research abstract

Bipropellant Systems usually contain isolation valves feeding banks of thruster valves downstream of the propellant supply tanks. Thruster valve problems, when occurring in operation, could cause isolation valve closure, disabling the remaining "operable" thruster in the thruster bank. Marotta proposes to develop an innovative, unique solenoid valve that integrates both the isolation and thruster pulsing bipropellant valve functions. Marotta uses the normally "passive" redundant solenoid valve in a more "active" magnetically-latching, isolation valve role. The valve also combines the advantages of commonly used bipropellant torque motors and solenoid valves by incorporating "magnetically' linked fuel and oxidizer valves. Valve performance and dribble volume is subsequently comparable to a torque motor except the construction uses solenoid simplicity at a solenoid price. The proposed valve would replace existing bipropellant, redundant solenoid valves and eliminate the need for individual isolation valves. The valve subsequently permits individual thruster isolation when the thruster experiences difficulties. Although a bipropellant baseline configuration approach is used, the design is easily adaptable to similar dual-feed applications. BMD0 will benefit from an efficient, high-performance duel-feed valve with high reliability at low cost and, compared to existing isolation/thruster valve systems, less weight. Applications for the magnetically-linked concept include commercial space and industrial applications. The power saving features, the ability to manifold and the ability to provide control from long distances and/or networking, are requirements of several industrial and commercial uses.
