Research abstract

Dramatic extensions of a recently-demonstrated, electro-optic, radiated- RF-field probe concept areallow RF field measurements in RF hyperthermia therapy and other important health-related applicatiomethod employs optical-phase-modulating transducers to measure the amplitudes of single RF field vecsignificant innovations will allow the development of an all-dielectric probe small enough and nonpeused in a catheter inside biological specimens or simulations, and which can independently and simulboth amplitudes and phases of all three vector components of the RF field. The probe, which communiclaser/receiver system via a single optical fiber, will have flat frequency response well into the misufficient sensitivity for hyperthermia and other biomedical (and non-biomedical) applications. Theapplications ensures future commercialization. In Phase I a breadboarded, two-mm-diameter, three-fiesystem will be demonstrated in the laboratory; a complete Phase-II probe system to be used for Phaseresearch-facility demonstrations will be designed, and the feasibility of several innovative conceptminiaturization and sensitivity enhancement will, on a best-effort basis, be investigated.
