Research abstract
Joint STARS, Global Hawk UAVs and space-based radars provide long-term GMTI data over wide areas that can be exploited to detect ground target threats, support Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield (IPB) and understand vehicle traffic patterns. InPhase 1, Technology Service Corp. (TSC) teamed with transportation engineers from Washington State University's Transportation Center (TRAC) to apply their state-of-the-art traffic visualization and analysis techniques to military surveillance. TSCextended TRAC's novel metrics and developed spatial analysis techniques to identify vehicle traffic patterns which may indicate military activity or locations of interest to cue ID sensors. In Phase 2, TSC will extend these promising data miningalgorithms and upgrade existing ground traffic simulations and vehicle behavior models to evaluate performance under more stressing conditions. TSC will also implement prototype data mining software tools for AFRL's web-based MTI Exploitation (MTIX)system. This capability will complement existing MTIX operator sentinel alerts, semi-automated motion analysis tools and track grouping functionality. The benefits of data mining will then be demonstrated in conjunction with a military exercise or usingGMTI data collected from an operational mission. These innovative techniques have application to current and future GMTI sensor ground stations and tactical exploitation systems. TSC and TRAC will also investigate commercial DOT applications includingtraffic data collection, law enforcement monitoring, and evacuation management.
