Research abstract
This project will develop innovative technology and architecture to support the design of decision aids capable of accumulating diverse experiences, integrating inputs from disparate sources, and then applying this knowledge to suggest a course of actions in new complex situations, even when presented with incomplete and uncertain data. The new technology is derived from a model of the nervous system, called Virtual Network. The model explains and simulates human capability to perform complex real time tasks in the uncertain environment, such as flying aircrafts or controlling power plants, with the help of a fast but small capacity Short Term Memory and large capacity hut slow Long Term Memory. According to the model, integrative processes in Long Term Memory underlie the efficiency of human performance. Incorporating the architecture and operational principles of human memory in the decision aid allows fast approximate solution of new large -scale problems based on diverse experiences accumulated throughout the aid's history. The technology and the product are intended primarily for military markets. Other potential customers include developers and suppliers of large -scale complex industrial systems, such as process and power plants, and telecommunication networks.
