Research abstract

The proposed Phase II project will develop the proposer¿_s STAR-driven thermoacoustic cooling technology from the proof-of-principle device designed, built, tested, and proven in Phase I, to demonstration of cost and performance in multiple 2nd generationprototype refrigerators designed to match Army Field Kitchen requirements. It builds on the success of the Phase I project, including additional work done by CFIC after the project had been officially completed. The workplan includes test measurements ofbaseline performance of conventional and prototype thermoacoustic refrigerators, iteration for improved performance, assembly and delivery of tested, operational 2nd generation units to the Army. Development of rugged food storage refrigerators with lowerpower and energy requirements and reduced maintenance and specialty fluid inventories will assist the Operation and Support Cost Reduction efforts of the Army. There is also a commercial requirement for efficient and cost-effective, reliable refrigeratorsthat do not use environmentally-threatening or hazardous fluids or materials. Thermoacoustic cooling driven by resonant STAR linear motors fits both needs. Such cooling systems operate with zero wear, low-noise, and low-vibration, and they provideintrinsic load-following modulation capability and insensitivity to off-design conditions. This technology is also applicable for use in rooftop air-conditioning units, further increasing the commercialization potential of the proposed Phase II project.
