Research abstract

70689 Interferometric measurements of plasma density distribution, needed for fusion energy research, require enhanced productivity. To address this need, this project will develop a new millimeter-wave interferometer with electronically switched multiple channels. Phase I will design and fabricate key components of the new instrument. Computer simulation and laboratory testing will be used to prove the feasibility of its operation. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The new instrument should provide design compactness, versatility, and cost-effectiveness, and should dramatically enhance the productivity of measurements of plasma-density distributions. It should be attractive for installation at plasma devices all over the world including tokamaks and stellarators.
