Research abstract

A unique approach to the problem of portable signal identification training (PSIT) is proposed through the use of an integrated signals database, training software, and the re-use of operator interface software. Two training scenarios are addressed:standalone training mode and transmit training mode. The proposed approach is based entirely on COTS hardware. The approach also minimizes the hardware parts count, minimizing cost and maximizing service, sparing, and re-use of necessary hardware. APSGproposes a Phase I effort to investigate and design a fully functional PSIT system for both training scenarios, and to develop a demonstration model of the first scenario. APSG will leverage its in-house wireless signal monitoring product experience, knowledge of related signals, and existing collection of signal snapshots to minimize program risk. The proposed system will provide training on a wide variety of signal types and training scenarios, and provide training on both signal characteristics andon monitoring system operation. In addition to SOCOM's force protection requirement, counter narcotics, homeland defense, counter terrorism, and investigative law enforcement drive the need for training in wireless monitoring system use and their targetsignals. The market need is driven by limited budgets combined with ever changing wireless communications protocols. The signals training equipment will be flexible to accept new signals, even of unanticipated types. Designing and building a flexible, extensible system will reduce the number of such systems needed and reduce the overall cost of such systems to the government, across the many agencies which stand to benefit from such a system.
