Research abstract
LIGHT METAL TECHNOLOGIES, Inc. proposes to develop a novel, alternative method to create reflective surfaces to aircrew helmets and overcome the existing disadvantages of the reflective sheeting. Our proposed method uses individual randomly oriented microspheres (glass spheres with a size range of 15 - 30 micrometers in diameter), partially coated with a reflecting surface of aluminum, and incorporated into a liquid carrier vehicle complete with binder agents and dyes as needed. The proposed coatings could also be adapted to apply robust reflective surfaces to the flight suits and other wearing apparel of the aircrews. We are proposing a one or two step coating process applied directly to the helmet using a spray system during the manufacture of the helmet. The major features of our proposed method are: 1. total helmet area coverage for maximum light reflection, 2. increased fight reflection from all angles, 3. fast and cost-effective application, 4. low cost materials and production methods, 5. the capability of changing the color of the helmet and the reflected light color, and 6. no adverse effects to the helmet during damage repair.
