Research abstract

72900S03-I A simple, low cost, magnetic measurement capability is needed for quadrupoles and dipoles of varying aperture and magnetic lengths. This project will develop a simple, low cost, magnetic measurement system to measure both the integrated magnetic field strength in dipole magnets and the integrated gradient strength and alignment parameters in quadrupole magnets. Phase I will demonstrate the technical viability of the proposed novel magnetometer. Measurements of the integrated, magnetic field gradient and alignment parameters in quadrupole magnets will be made. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: A sensitive, yet simple, magnetic measurement technique should lower the cost and complexity of measuring the magnetic properties of accelerator magnets. The magnetic measurement device also should have application to synchrotron systems used in the semi-conductor and medical device industries.
