Research abstract

A key requirement of any future head support device is to develop concepts as integrated system. Such programs must consider not only safety, but also helmet-mounted sights/displays and other systems for mission enhancement. The design process must also be developed in concurrence with aviators' needs, desires, and requirements. This program employs a system approach to define and design a preliminary head/ neck support system. This includes an advanced helmet shell design coupled to an integral mandibular face shield with an integrated oxygen mask, and an inflatable head/neck support device. Phase 1 objectives include development of design concepts, modeling performance, and fabrication of a non-functional prototype helmet with integral head and neck support. The mandibular support system, oxygen mask, disconnects, helmet balance and stability, comfort, and vision will be evaluated by the flying population and documented. Considerations for windblast and high-G maneuvering will be analytically developed and documented for incorporation into the optimum helmet design concept.
