Research abstract

Advanced ceramic-based composite heat exchanger has the potential to reduce weight, improve ECS performance, increase aircraft payload, and decrease life-cycle cost. Under the Phase I effort, Allcomp has assembled a strong and experienced team to addressall relevant issues in designing and producing a functional lightweight composite heat exchanger for V-22 at an affordable price. In Phase I, we established design configuration and property goals for V-22 ECS heat exchanger based on actual size envelope of the baseline Aluminum heat exchanger. Key technical issues were also addressed. Modified carbon foam, which provides goodthermal conductivity while maintaining its pore structure was examined as a possible core material. Carbon-based joining techniques were demonstrated and more than 50% weight saving was achieved. An innovative low-cost fabrication method was identifiedand demonstrated.Under the Phase II program, we propose to focus our efforts on the following key issues:,X To generate performance data using sub-scale heat exchangers for design optimization,X To address key technical issues related to composite heat exchanger in general and the V-22 heat exchanger in specific,X To fabricate a functional prototypeV-22 heat exchanger for performance evaluation at Hamilton Sundstrand.
