Research abstract

Triton Systems Inc. proposes a Phase II program to position the low-cost, lightweight composite range extension kit wing developed under Phase I for insertion into ongoing range extension kit programs. Phase I demonstrated >40% cost savings, 66% weightsavings, and equivalent stiffness in the Triton composite wing relative to the machined and gun-drilled aluminum extrusion baseline wing. Phase II will apply the innovative materials, processes, and design approaches demonstrated in Phase I to a specific,near-term application. The opportunity addressed by this program is to make range extension kits significantly more cost-effective. Range extension kits have been shown to increase the standoff range for munitions while improving target accuracy, enhancing munitionseffectiveness, and reducing collateral damage. The Phase I program succeeded in demonstrating a new wing design and a transitional engineering approach for composites, both driven by manufacturing cost as the primary driver. The Phase II program will benefit the range extension kit community through wing cost savings of millions of dollars for a typical production program, a 50% or greater reduction in weight which improves munitions effectiveness and accuracy, and throughpositioning the composite wing technology for immediate insertion into ERWCMD with minimal additional investment.
