Research abstract

While the need for an informed partnership between teenagers with disabilities, family members, educators and employers is ever apparent, there appears to be a scarcity of relevant, accessible video programming for these groups. In light of this need, People Productions proposes to create a series of programs on videotape that respond to the issue of teens with disabilities making the transition from school to work. An exceedingly high dropout rate, procrastination in entering transitional programs, student apathy and employer resistance to change are just a few of the problems a well-produced video series could seek to remedy. The messages brought forth by a thoughtful examination of this issue would be well served through the medium of television, the most powerful technology by which messages are instilled into our culture. We are currently in communication with the Colorado Department of Education and others involved with the School-to-Work Initiative, the Transistions Project and IDEA, who have agreed to act as consultants. In addition, our nationwide research will lead us to others vital in the field of school-to-work as we proceed with writing the final treatment and script for the series.
