Research abstract

50215-98-I High Resolution Laboratory SPECT System--Mosaic Imaging Technology, Inc., 255 West Hellen Road, Palatine, IL 60067-6876; (847) 622-5451 Dr. Raymond P. DeVito, Principal Investigator Mr. James R. Domnanovich, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG02-98ER82623 Amount: $75,000 Current Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography instrumentation for research laboratory imaging of small animals has consisted primarily of a few custom-made devices or has relied on the use of conventional gamma cameras designed for the morphology of human patients. However, conventional SPECT has relatively poor performance for small object imaging because of the unfavorable geometry of conventional gamma cameras. As a result, researchers are limited in the imaging tools that they can apply to biological research and drug development. This project aims to develop a novel high-resolution SPECT device suitable for small animal imaging. This device will use an innovative configuration adapted to the imaging needs of small objects. A thorough evaluation of design constraints necessary to achieve high resolution will be conducted. A prototype will be developed to demonstrate the technology. The primary objectives of Phase I are to determine the sampling geometry required for high resolution and to understand the practical measurement limitations set by real devices. This understanding will be used to define the configuration and the target specifications for a product prototype. In Phase II a prototype based on the specifications generated in Phase I will be constructed and tested. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: This high-resolution SPECT product should provide a valuable tool for biological research and drug development laboratories as well as to veterinary clinics. Currently no acceptable imaging device meets the needs for these specialized markets. Further development will extend the technology to human clinical imaging applications._
