Research abstract

Carburizing is the most widely used heat treating process in theworld with a percentage of sales in the U.S. market about 21% andvalue more than $3 billion. The New Carburizing Technology issimple and inexpensive. There are no limitations to the form, shape, dimensions, or material of the part to be treated. It ispossible to obtain diffusion surface layer thicknesses from themicron range up to several millimeters and to reach carboncontents from 0.8% up to 6% within the time from seconds tominutes. Surface layer form, thickness, chemical composition, structure and properties can be adjusted for various applicationsby varying the inductor design, active medium and processingregime. The process is tightly controlled, thus assuring highpart quality. Research and development performed in Phase I havebeen shown that this technology has a high grade of scientific, technical and commercial fasibility, which has been demonstratedto the Navy. High-frequency induction carburizing can be used asa substitute for conventional furnace carburzing; flame, welding, and induction surfacing by hard alloys; and for some existingmethods of steel anticorrosion protection. This process is a newtreatment method for creating multilayered diffusion coating forimproving surface properties of various special alloys, which arebase, or contain sufficient amounts of carbide forming elementsand for creating seflubricating diffusion coatings. Sanova-Polytech, Inc. has outlined a comprehensive Phase II and Phase IIOption Program to create the prototype of production equipmentand technology for manufacturing of real parts for furthertesting.
