Research abstract

Not Available This Small Business Innovation Research Phase I project will establish the feasibility of developing a Positron Trap Beam Source (PTBS) that will provide a state-of-the-art positron beam for a variety of applications in science and technology. The PTBS will produce a brightness-enhanced positron beam by employing recent advances in the field of nonneutral plasma science to achieve high-efficiency brightness enhancement. The technical objectives of Phase I are: (1) to assemble an experiment to study compression of positron plasmas by a rotating electric field; (2) test plasma compression at a low magnetic field in the presence of a buffer gas; (3) develop the conceptual design for the laboratory prototype to be constructed in Phase II; and (4) (option) investigate advanced methods for beam extraction. If successful, the experiments will provide a basis for the design and construction of a laboratory prototype of the system in Phase II. Positron beams are the basis of a variety of analytical tools for the study of surfaces and solids. The are also used in atomic physics research and have potential for application in mass spectrometry. The PTBS will advance these applications by providing beams that are significantly colder and brighter than any currently available.
