Research abstract
Not Available Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are critical to numerous military and civilian applications. They are required for eliminating terrain-induced MTI position errors, and distortion in SAR imagery, as well as for performing vehicle cross-country mobility analysis and enhanced ground target tracking. However, high quality DEMs are often difficult or impossible to obtain. Since current techniques to produce DEMs have significant drawbacks, TSC proposes to develop methods that extract DEMs directly from MTI clutter data. Two techniques will be investigated during Phase I, including interferometric and stereo processing of MTI clutter. Interferometric processing of MTI clutter data is applicable to all MTI systems that produce multiple looks of the same ground patch from different aspects. During Phase I, these techniques will be investigated for feasibility and evaluated for performance. The applicability of each technique will then be assessed using simulation models of radar systems such as Joint STARS, Global Hawk and ARL. TSC will leverage existing Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (IFSAR) techniques and software, Automatic Terrain Classification (ATC) software developed for DDARPA, photogrammetry experience gained in urban database development contracts for the FAA, and image processing and general classification techniques developed during numerous efforts.
