Research abstract

An integrated design and synthesis environment based on an object-oriented, web-enabled, multidisciplinary framework supporting the engineering of Hypersonic Air-breathing Vehicles (HAV) is proposed. It facilitates vehicle development by integrating a 3Dfeature-based design with high fidelity aerodynamic, propulsion, structural, and trajectory analyses covering the full flight regime from Mach 0.3 to 20. HAV configurations and structural design and subsystem layout can be easily configured, analyzed, andoptimized. 3D structured meshes for coupled CFD and finite element structural analyses are automated. High fidelity CFD methods for tip-to-tail aerodynamics and propulsion methods will be developed. A common computational model seamlessly integratesgeometry and analysis to support vehicle closure through iterative control allowing forward and inverse design. It provides multidisciplinary optimization capabilities to enhance vehicle analysis, reducing engineering time and cost while expanding thedesign space explored. TechnoSoft, the Boeing Company, and HyPerComp will develop and exercise the environment in the design and analysis of an HAV. An integrated environment facilitating design and high fidelity aerodynamics and structural analysis ofHAVs at a level not currently available will be deployed. The overall engineering process for evaluating potential space operation vehicle concepts through detailed and integrated design and analyses will be enhanced.
