Research abstract

THE OPERATION OF PARTICLE ACCELERATORS FOR NUCLEAR PHYSICS APPLICATIONS REQUIRES TIGHT CONTROL OF BEAM PARAMETERS SUCH AS ENERGY, ENERGY SPREAD, AND EMITTANCE. PRESENT ENERGY MEASUREMENT TECHNOLOGY REQUIRES INTERRUPTION OF OPERATION AS THE ELECTRON BEAM IS DIVERTED AND FOCUSSED ONTO A DETECTOR WIRE. NONINTERCEPTING BEAM DIAGNOSTICS ARE REQUIRED SO THAT THE BEAM PARAMETERS CAN BE MONITORED AND CORRECTED WHILE THE NUCLEAR PHYSICS EXPERIMENTS ARE PROVIDING DATA. A NONINTERCEPTING MONITOR IS BEING DEVELOPED TO OBTAIN BEAM INFORMATION FROM THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SPONTANEOUS EMISSION SPECTRUM OF AN OPTICAL KLYSTRON. THIS TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN EMPLOYED TO MEASURE THE ENERGY SPREAD AND EMITTANCE OF THE ELECTRON BEAMIN A STORAGE RING. THE CENTRAL OBJECTIVES FOR PHASE I ARE TO OPTIMIZE THE PERFORMANCE GIVEN THE LOW LIGHT LEVEL CHARACTERISTIC OF LINEAR ACCELERATORS AND TO DEMONSTRATE A SIMPLE ALGORITHM FOR THE ON-LINE EXTRACTION OF EMITTANCE DATA. PERFORMANCE IS BEING OPTIMIZED SUBJECT TO THE CONSTRAINTS IMPOSED BY THE CONTINUOUS ELECTRON BEAM ACCELERATOR FACILITY AND RELATIVISTIC HEAVY ION COLLIDER SYSTEM PARAMETERS AND THE ACCURACY AND DYNAMIC RANGE OF THE DEVICE PROJECTED. THE PHASE II EFFORT WILL BE TO CONSTRUCT A PROTOTYPE DEVICE AND BEGIN TO OBTAIN OPERATING INFORMATIONON ONE OF THE ABOVE FACILITIES.
