Research abstract

This project will utilize organic composite processing techniques; a novel, high yield, stoichiometricSiC forming preceramic ppolymer; and modified organic polymers to produce test specimens and components for high temperature propulsion applications. The techniiques will be used to produce plates and test specimens in Phase I, and then small scale components such as rocket nozzles in Phase II. The plates will be manufactured via an innovative injection and resin transfer molding process that can produce components with one hard dense surface, a process that can produce components with one hard dense surface, a tough intermediate layer, and a controlled porosity bonding surface. Once fabricated, the samples will be evaluated to determine material microstructure, mechanical strength, thermal cycling resistance, and thru-thickness heat transfer. Comparisons will be made with current material data provided by the Air Force. Successful achievement of the Phase I objectives will demonstrate a novel manufacturing process for producing hybrid ceramic-polymeric materials. The Phase II program will produce subscale components for testing.
