Research abstract

SOME HEAVY METAL SILICIDES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS VERY PROMISING HIGH TEMPERATURE THERMOELECTRIC MATERIALS THAT SHOULD YIELD MUCH HIGHER FIGURES-OF-MERIT THAN THE PRESENTLY USED SILICON-GERMANIUM-BASED ALLOYS. IT SHOULD ALSO BE POSSIBLE TO ALLOY SOME OF THESE SILICIDES WITH THE KNOWN THERMOELECTRIC ALLOYS TO FURTHER IMPROVE THEIR FIGURES-OF-MERIT AND THEREBY IMPROVE THE TOTAL NUCLEAR POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM. PHASE I OF THIS PROJECT INCLUDES EVALUATION OF ALLOYS SUCH AS THE SILICIDES OF OSMIUM IN BOTH THE DOPED AND THE UNDOPED CONDITIONS. CHARACTERIZATION OF THESE MATERIALS WILL INCLUDE SEEBECK COEFFICIENT, THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY, AND ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY.
