Research abstract

The objective of this project is to develop, test and demonstrate the capability to identify individual soldiers through the use of cooperative and/or non-cooperative techniques. The offset will emphasize particularly the identification of friendly forces using cooperative techniques. The process could involve either manual or automatic response. An important requirement for the SID technique includes convertness (low proability of intercept) and secure operations. Several SID techniques meeting the specified objectives are proposed. The interrogation of and response from the individual soldier is accomplished by communications via laser, infrared, and RF techniques. Proposed tasks to be performed in Phase I include: (a) perform analysis, computer simulation and experimental demonstration on the feasibility of the proposed SID techniques, (b) the effectiveness of the chosen technique will be evaluated and compared with specific requirements, perform tradeoff analysis for the selection of the optimum approach, and (c) investigate the performance limitations and risk factors for Phase II prototype development effort.
