Research abstract

As computer workstations continue to increase in the ability to display more information, the necessity for an intuitive Command and Control (C2) display becomes paramount. Interaction efficiency is critical to avoid operator fatigue and minimize operatorerror rates that could cost lives. In emerging C2 systems and concepts, the user typically acts as a manager by exception while the majority of system activity is computer automated. While direct interaction of the user with the system is minimal, aninaccurate action by the user can have catastrophic consequences. There is clearly a need for decision aiding systems in C2 Displays. This effort demonstrates the use of human engineered intelligent tools to satisfy this need. An intelligent tool is aprocess that acts as an assistant to the user by displaying suggested actions. However, the method of displaying information directly affects the action taken by an operator. The actions taken by an operator may be erroneous if the decision aidingdisplay method is not compatible with the cognitive functions of the operator. Without the appropriate incorporation of Human Factors Engineering integrated into a decision aiding display, the most sophisticated intelligent algorithm is useless.
