A process is required to facilitate the automated production of precision copper accelerator cells at an extremely high level of accuracy and repeatability. This project will demonstrate the accuracy, repeatability, reliability, and cost competitiveness of an automated, precision computer controlled machining center for the mass production of ultra precision copper accelerator cells. In Phase I, market-available computer numeric controls will be enhanced, the controls will be applied to an ultra precision machine, and the machine will be characterized. Finally, the feasibility of producing parts with this machine will be determined.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The methodology for producing parts with high levels of accuracy and repeatability should have commercial applications in the semiconductor and energy industries._
