Research abstract
AST is developing a non-invasive methodology to continuously monitor blood glucose concentration. As opposed to employing near infrared spectroscopy, which suffers from limitations of sensitivity, stability, and repeatability, AST employs directmeasurement of glucose, via amperometric sensors, from minute amounts of interstitial fluid obtained transdermally. AST's miniature transdermal sampling system provides the capability to transduce the concentration of glucose and other biomoleculesincluding electrolytes, hormones, therapeutic drugs, etc., in real-time.Blood glucose concentrations can be used to determine metabolic status as well as to asses the degree of physiological and psychological stress experienced by the individual. Military troops can be instantly analyzed for their daily trend in bloodglucose, providing evidence for physiological and psychological stress. Utilizing this information, soldiers can be selected for an operation based upon their ability to handle the physiological and psychological stress associated with warfare. Further,AST's system can warn the soldier that they must ingest food or rest via internal alarms.Once outfitted with closed-loop control, automated infusion of insulin can be achieved to maintain euglycemia at all times.
