Research abstract

Not Available Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI) radar is designed to suppress returns from stationary background (clutter) in order to detect and track moving objects which would otherwise be obscured. However, many applications of GMTI, such as the military applications of tracking and targeting and civilian applications such as traffic monitoring and support to disaster relief, require accurate knowledge of terrain elevation and terrain feature positions (e.g. roads) which is up to date and accurately registered with the target track. Normally suppressed stationary clutter contains such information. The objective of this project is to characterize the terrain elevation information inherent in the clutter, to devise and validate algorithms for recovering elevation profiles of the terrain, and to recommend signal processing techniques to process the ground clutter as an applique to existing GMTI sensors. Our approach uses the effects of propagation (shadowing and possibly diffraction and multipath) together with a model of terrain scattering to reconstruct the terrain elevation profile based on clutter information contained in a sequence of GMTI scans.
