Research abstract
Design of an ultra low power satellite transceiver is needed, which is technically innovative in three areas. First, interoperability with non-geostationary satellite systems as well as conventional geostationary systems is proposed, allowing global coverage, very small antenna, large field of view, and near 100% availability even for poorly sited terminals. Second, digital signal processing techniques capable of low power operation in extreeme environments are proposed to achieve high data rate with low bit error rate, suppress stron, nearby, inband transmitters, and reduce the probability of detection or intercept. Third, development of digital and analog circuits, including application specific integrated circuit design, microwave solid state circuit design, will be investigated to minimize power consumption, increase reliability in austere environments, and reduce production costs. Together, these design innnovations will allow manufacture of units that are lightweight, rugged, easily deployable, and able to operate on a small battery for 30 days. The goal of this research is to valideate the achievability of cost, size, and power consumption objectives in a militarized unit while maximizing operational unitlity including hight data reae, wide interoperability (e.g., military/commercial, current/near future, frequency ability and geographic coverage), and maximum link availability.
