Research abstract

65858 The spectroradiometric calibration of remote sensing instruments in the ultraviolet, needed for radiometric measurements in the atmosphere, is often subject to significant uncertainties due to out-of-band scattered light, significant uncertainties associated with low radiometric calibration source flux levels, and significant differences in spectral flux gradients between geophysical scenes and calibrations sources. This project will develop a large aperture, UV calibration source and a spectral radiance calibration technique, which is based on a NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) FEL (Free Electron Laser) lamp spectral irradiance scale. In Phase I, the large aperture, UV radiometric calibration source will be evaluated in terms of short and long term radiometric stability, uniformity, and spectral flux levels (for the spectral flux distributions from ultraviolet geophysical scenes). Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: The UV calibration source should significantly reduce radiometric calibration uncertainties in instruments designed for remote sensing of ultraviolet geophysical scenes.
