Research abstract

79505S The Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) needs a number of radio frequency (RF) amplifiers at a range of frequencies. This project will develop a modular, VED (Vacuum Electronic Device) based, RF amplifier for the RIA and commercial RF power applications, based on commercially available VEDs and existing high power electronics. Phase I will design the overall RF amplifier, select the specific VEDs required for the RIA frequencies, and demonstrate the key RF drive elements of the amplifier itself. The design will utilize common power supplies, controls, and other components. An advanced power supply and RF drive capabilities will provide a high level of flexibility, fault protection, and RF performance from this modular design. Fabrication will take place in Phase II, culminating with the delivery of an RF amplifier capable of supporting the full RIA requirements. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: There are a wide range of RF amplifier requirements for military systems, communication systems, and industrial applications such as plasma generation, RF heating, and drying/curing. Currently, these requirements are met by application and frequency specific designs, which are tailored to each application. A common, modular RF amplifier system would allow these applications to benefit from efficiencies of scale. The lower costs would render these systems attractive to a broader range of potential markets and applications.
