Research abstract

The proposed project involves the derivation of accurate E, P, V and T, P, V equations of state of unreacted explosives, which are needed, e.g., in order to calculate temperature-dependent reaction kinetics and thermal explosion times for use in modeling the formation, ignition, and subsequent reaction of hot spots that determine the initiation of energetic materials. The anticipated Phase I results include the following: (i) the development of more accurate E, P, V equations of state for unreacted explosives than exist now, whose range of validity would extend from the high-pressure range (hundreds of kilobars) down to the 1 bar region, which is needed to describe explosive voids collapsing under shock loading; (ii) the development of thermodynamically compatible T, P, V equations of state of unreacted explosives, which satisfy the experimental temperature variation with volume along the 1 bar line and which are needed in the development of temperature-dependent models of the reaction process. Two different forms for the E, P, V equation of stat will be considered: one of the Mie-Gruneisen type; the second based on a variational principle. It is expected that these equations of state will be used in codes that model the initiation, explosion, and/or detonation of explosives and propellants by impacting fragments, blast waves, penetrators, and shaped charge jets, and the transition from slow/fast cookoff to detonation.
