Research abstract
Bright, fast, transparent, gamma-free scintillators for thermal neutrons are needed in the detector systems of large neutron research facilities. This project will develop quantum-dot-based neutron scintillators, which will show substantial improvements over existing scintillators, especially in count rate, detection efficiency, and spatial resolution. In particular, semiconductor quantum-dot-based composite neutron scintillators will be investigated. Phase I will focus on enhancing light yield and transparency. Phase II will extend the work to optimize synthesis routes and enhance light extraction efficiency using photonic concepts. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The bright, gamma-free neutron scintillator should have a high impact on neutron diffractometers and high-resolution neutron imaging devices. Other applications include homeland security, biomedical research, and nuclear/high energy physics research.
