Research abstract

40489 Eltron Research, Inc. In the synthesis of oxygenated fuels, membranes are used to separate oxygen from the atmosphere. This project will apply neural network analysis to optimize mixed oxygen anion and electron conducting membranes in order to achieve high oxygen diffusion flux rates and long term chemical stability. Systematic experimentation will be performed for the rational selection of preferred lattice substituents and compositions. Materials predicted by the analysis will be synthesized and their oxygen anion conduction experimentally determined. The utility of preferred membranes for oxygen separation will be determined in chemical reactors. Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications as described by the awardee: The oxygen anion conduction in these lattice will result in high mobilities and high flux rates for net oxygen transport. They should find application for the direct separation of oxygen from the atmosphere for promoting specific oxygenation reactions.
