Research abstract

AT MULTI-UNIT NUCLEAR GENRATING STATIONS, CONTROL ROOM OPERATORS ARE GENERALLY LICENSED TO OPERATE ALL SIMILAR UNITS. SIMULATOR TRAINING CONDUCTED AT THE LICENSEE TRAINING FACILITY OCCURS ON ONE SIMULATOR WHICH MAY NOT EXACTLY MIMIC ANY UNIT. INADEQUATE TRAINING ON UNIT-TO-UNIT AND UNIT-TO-SIMULATOR DIFFERENCES, IN CONJUNCTION WITH LIMITED PER-PERSON SIMULATOR TRAINING HOURS, CAN RESULT IN INCREASED SUSCEPTIBILITY TO OPERATOR ERROR. THIS COULD RESULT IN REDUCED PLANT AVAILABILITY AND CHALLENGES TO PLANT SAFETY SYSTEMS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PHASE I EFFORT WOULD BE TO ESTABLISH WHETHER OR NOT LINKS EXIST BETWEEN OPERATOR EFFECTIVENESS AND THE SIMULATOR TRAINING RECEIVED AT SINGLE-UNIT STATIONS. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS OBJECTIVE, AVAILABLE RELATIVE MEASURES OF QUALITATIVE OPERATOR PERFORMANCE AND THE AVILABLE NUMBER OF ACTUAL SIMULATOR CONTACT HOURS FOR BOTH THE REPLICATE AND NON-REPLICATE UNIT OF A SAMPLE POPULATION OF MULTI-UNIT STATIONS AND SINGLE-UNIT STATIONS WOULD BE COLLECTED, ANALYZED, AND CORRELATED TO SPECIFIC UNIT-TO-UNIT AND UNIT-TO-SIMULATOR DIFFERENCES AT THE MULTI-UNIT STATIONS SAMPLED.
