Research abstract

The lithium/thionyl chloride bipolar battery configuration, with thin electrode and separator components, is ideal for high rate voltage and high power applications. The bipolar electrode design supports a high rate capability by providing shortest and least resistive current path between adjacent cells in a through a thin bipolar plate. Program objective includes: 1) optimization of the important cathode thickness and density, and electrolyte concentration for maximum power and capacity, 2) optimization of method for sealing adjacent Tefzel rings dividual bipolar plates) in a bipolar stack of cells, 3) modify captu design for bipolar plate production, and 4) design of a safe cell fo bipolar module capable of high power discharge at load voltages above A test matrix is proposed for evaluation of cathodde thickness and density cell polarization and constant power tests. Electrolyte concentration optimized using the two best cathodes from this matrix. The stack seaffl will be optimized using the hot gas welder method in conjunction with u bipolar plate. The bipolar cell design will be based on the above tesffl The goal of this project is to present a viable bipolar design which meets the power and energy density requirements for missile guidance power sources.
