Research abstract

FOSSIL FUEL FIRED VITRIFICATION TECHNOLOGY IS RECEIVING INCREASED EMPHASIS AS A POTENTIALLY ATTRACTIVE MEANS FOR OXIDIZING ORGANIC MATERIALS AND IMMOBILIZING THE HEAVY METAL CONSTITUENTS IN HAZARDOUS FLYASHES AND DUSTS. SINCE VITRIFICATION IS A HIGH TEMPERATURE PROCESS, THERE IS SOME VOLATILIZATION OF HEAVY METALS AND CARRY-OVER OF THIS MATERIAL, ALONG WITH A SMALL AMOUNT OF OTHER INORGANIC CONSTITUENTS, IN THE FLUE GAS TO AIR POLLUTION CONTROL EQUIPMENT. IN SOME CASES, THE CARRYOVER CAN BE SOLD TO A METALS RECLAIMER; HOVEVER, IN SOME INSTANCES THE PRESENCE OF OTHER CONSTITUENTS INHIBITS METALS RECLAMATION, AND THE CARRYOVER MUST BE DISPOSED IN A HAZARDOUS WASTE LANDFILL. VORTEC CORPORATION PROPOSES TO DEVELOP IN INNOVATIVE CONCEPT FOR RECYCLING THE HEAVY METAL CARRYOVER FROM ITS HAZARDOUS FLYASH/DUST VITRIFICATION SYSTEM BACK INTO THE OXIDIZING ENVIRONMENTAL OF THE CYCLONE MELTER IN ITS ADVANCED VITRIFICATION PROCESS. PHASE I OF THE PROPOSED PROGRAM WILL ASSESS THE TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY OF THE PROPOSED RECYCLING CONCEPT VIA TESTING WITH A PILOT-SCALE FACILITY; THAT IS, IS WILL IDENTIFY THE AMOUNT OF CARRYOVER MATERIAL THAT CAN BE INCORPORATED INTO THE VITRIFIED PRODUCT AND THE HEAVY METAL LEACHING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PRODUCT.
