Research abstract
SDL, Inc. proposes to develop monolithic individually addressable 2-D laser array operating at 2.0 pm wavelength. The proposed 2-D array will be based on the state of the art single mode surface emitting laser and high power 2.0 pm laser diode technologies demonstrated by SDL, Inc. In Phase I of the program SDL will study the feasibility of the critical components resulting in a demonstration of a small scale version of the proposed configuration. In Phase II, Phase I will be extended to the development of an monolithic addressable 30 x 30 cw 2-D mid-infrared laser source. The proposed program for the development of the 2-D array will yield a compact, robust, high speed, high power, individually addressable 2-D source of mid-IR radiation. SDL, Inc. is ideally suited to carry out the proposed research due to SDL's unparalleled experience with the development of high power, reliable laser diodes covering 0.630-2.0 um spectrum range, including 8 W CW at 2.0 um and 50 W cw monolithic 2-D array at 960 nm. Anticipated Benefits/Potential Applications - The addressable monolithic 2-D array will be suitable for the infrared scene projection and other ARPA applications including, eye safe laser radar, eye safe target designators, electronic countermeasures, pumps for HO:YAG lasers, and for medical applications.
