Research abstract

In this proposal, we present the design of an Integrated Optics Rotation and Acceleration Sensor (IORAS) that is able to function both as a rotation sensor as well as an accelerometer. The proposed IORAS is based on a rugged integrated optics glass on silicon waveguide distinct advantage of the IORAS over other inertial navigation devices such as silicon forces without saturation and thus can continue to navigate in the gun barrel during the carrier micromachined inertial components is that it has the ability o continue operation under high g launch phase. It is lightweight, compact, and consumes a minimum of electrical power. It is potentially much more sensitive than micromachined components, with a wider dynamic range. Its signal processing is trivial in that it requires no crystal oscillator. In addition, an automotive-grade IORAS can be easily mass produced at low cost to meet the performance specifications of a military style inertial navigator. The outcome of this project will be a set of design specifications for the construction in Phase II of a prototype IORAS capable of inertial navigation of component munitions.
