Research abstract
Development of electric aircrafts, unmanned aerial vehicles, remote sensors, and more sophisticated and compact weapons has brought about the need for more compact, highly reliable energy sources. Our proposal addresses these needs by the development of supercapacitors based on high surface area (HSA) electrode materials and the utilization of these materials in high power and high energy density capacitors. In order to produce high energy density capacitors, HSA electrodes are needed. The high cost of the HSA noble ruthenium oxide makes this technology less accessible to a widespread market acceptance. Therefore, we propose to develop in Phase I, a process to fabricate transition metal nitrides such as molybdinum nitride, at low temperatures in order to create high surface area films compared to what has been obtained using oxide conversion techniques, and the films will be tested in a supercapacitor configuration. In Phase II, we will optimize the process and focus on its use in supercapacitors. During the Phase II program, we plan on scaling up the fabrication process of the nitrides and fabricate prototype capacitors for commercialization purposes.
