Research abstract
Not Available Cavitation is ordinarily a chance-dominated process. Recent research in ACIM (Acoustic Coaxing Induced Microcavitation) promises to solve the long-standing problem of controlling cavitation . Being able to control microcavitation enables one to solve formidable engineering problems. During this Phase I effort, we seek to evaluate the feasibility of using ACIM for selective depainting and precision cleaning of delicate surfaces. Such cleaning will be accomplished using only SILENT SOUND and CLEAN WATER . No chemicals will be used. Acoustic microcavitation is brought about by low megahertz frequencies and involves micron size bubbles that last a few microseconds. During microcavitation the imploding cavities create intense energy densities at the implosion sites. Since these implosions are effective only at the thin surface layer, controlled microcavitation (ACIM) is ideal for cleaning surfaces without damaging the underlying substrate. ACIM assisted selective depainting and precision cleaning will be universal in application and effective on all substrate-paint/particulate combinations.
