Research abstract

Defense Planning Guidance (DPG), FY2000-2005 requires the United States (U.S.) Military to develop the capability to rapidly project a dominant ground force anywhere in the world within days. The Army Vision and draft Army Strategic Environments (Draft FM525-5) reinforce the DPG by requiring the right mix of mission tailored, combat-ready land forces and capabilities, including support and sustainment, to any point in the globe to achieve full spectrum force effectiveness and overmatch thoughout thespectrum of operations. This Phase II project is to produce a High Mobility Trailer Electric Vehicle (HMTEV) to demonstrate the benefits of combining advanced power-train technologies and energy absorption techniques to provide a materiel solution for a, tactically superior, morestrategically deployable force enabling propulsion and power management technology to ensure a flexible, effective and sustainable multi-mission force capable of projecting overwhelming military power worldwide. This proposed project will not only advance system/capabilities performance but it will also explore dramatic improvements in operational and organizational concepts by producing scaleable capability supporting mobility and power generation requirementsfor both near term Brigade Combat Teams (BCT) and the Army After Next long term objective solutions with commensurate reductions in logistic footprint, external support, and life cycle costs.
