Research abstract

Although laboratory research has indicated that measures of brain electrical activity can be useful indices of a crewperson's mental workload, this work has not yet been transitioned into operational environments. A major remaining obstacle in this regard is the fact that current generation EEG sensors usually require manual preparation of the skin surface prior to application and use of messy liquid or gelatinous electrolytes. This limitation makes such technology impractical for routine use in operational environments. The aim of the proposed Phase I work is to evaluate prototype designs for a Rapid Application Cutaneous Electrode (RACE) System that would permit fast application of bioelectric sensors on the scalp of subjects without significant preparation of the recording sites. This work will build on results from our prior efforts to develop instant application electrodes and holders. The Phase II effort will involve development and testing of a RACE based on the best Phase I design.
