Research abstract

Existing active isolation systems are complex, large, expensive, and provide only modest performance improvements relative to less-expensive passive isolation systems. Therefore active isolation systems have only been used in programs that have problemssevere enough to warrant these costs. When they are used, available isolation systems provide less than 10 dB performance improvements relative to simple passivecomponents. The industry needs a simple, compact, light, low-cost, high-performanceactive isolation option. The proposed concept is based on the principle of eliminating rigid links to the payload. To achieve this, one must solve the problems associated with a disconnected payload. These problems involve providing adequate caging for launch, landing or othertransportation loads. Additionally, provisions must be made to prevent damage when unanticipated large-amplitude base motion occurs. Further, signals must be transferred across the isolation gap with as little transmission of forces and torques aspossible. Finally, non-contacting actuators with very high efficiency are needed to prevent excessive power consumption. The solution involves robust mechanical stops, a eliable and robust caging mechanism, a reliable flexible umbilical cable andefficient non-contacting electro-magnetic actuators. This combination of technologies promises a complete solution to this unique set of technical issues.
