Research abstract

A new high-power, high voltage sealed, quasi-bipolar lead acid battery design is proposed for development which can operate under the broad range of conditions important to the Air Force. Key features of the design include: Low cost 700 W/kg, calculated Very high power density >1800 W/I, calculated Moderate specific energy >50 Wh/kg @ C/2, calculated Good energy density >120 Wh/I @ C/2, calculated Good life >400 cycles @ 80% DOD, est. The proposed program relates to the development of such a battery that is well-suited to high-power applications. More particularly, the invention provides a bipolar battery that uses fewer parts and is more easily assembled, thus providing a less expensive battery. It also facilitates lateral head transfer, permitting all battery cells to be laterally and uniformly cooled, and thereby operate at the same temperature. Thus, this battery can have great utility in high-voltage applications. Our lightweight, low-cost battery uses a minimal number of parts, provides improved cooling, is small, efficient and relatively easy to assemble/manufacture. Such a battery would contribute beneficially to reducing the costs of battery manufacture, and further, would be a positive step to producing affordable high-power electric batteries, such as could be applied to highway speed electric vehicles.
